Ange’s Celtic appointment ‘massive’ for Aussie football

Former Brisbane Roar boss John Aloisi says Ange Postecoglou’s expected appointment as Celtic manager will help the cause of Australian players and coaches.

Former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou could be confirmed as Celtic’s new manager as early as Wednesday.

The Scottish Sun has reported that Postecoglou will arrive in Scotland from Japan this weekend to start a 10-day quarantine period before taking charge of the Glasgow giants.

Postecoglou’s has reportedly agreed to terms with Celtic, with his last game in charge of Yokohama F. Marinos set to be Wednesday night’s Emperor’s Cup clash against Honda FC.

“It’s massive for Australian football,” former Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi said of Postecoglou’s imminent Celtic appointment.

“It’s not only (for) Australian coaches but Australian players.”

Former Socceroos striker Aloisi, who played top-flight football in Italy, Spain and England, said Postecoglou coaching Celtic would ensure a “trust in Australian football again”.

“I remember when I first went over to Europe (in 1992), there wasn’t that respect factor there and then we had to gain it and earn it, and then we went through that really good period,” he said.

“It’s a bit like that at the moment that they’re not trusting Australian players.”

Or coaches seemingly, with Tony Popovic and Kevin Muscat having been sacked by their respective Greek and Belgian clubs in the past seven months after short stints in charge.

Popovic will return to the A-League next season to coach Melbourne Victory, while ex-Victory mentor Muscat has been linked with a move to Western United, who on Tuesday announced the sacking of Mark Rudan.

“There have been mixed results, but I’ve got no doubt that if Ange does well, that it will help other Australian coaches,” Aloisi said.

“It’s exciting. I think we’ve got a good group of coaches in Australia and that they just want the opportunity and a little bit of patience, sometimes, when they do get the opportunity.”
