Sydney Kings legend Shane Heal is set to return to the coaching ranks as the head coach of the Sydney Flames in the WNBL.
Boomers legend Shane Heal is set to be named the new Sydney Flames coach in a significant signing for the franchise.
The NCA NewsWire can reveal Heal is set to unveiled as the Flames head coach after the franchise parted ways with Katrina Hibbert following the expiration of her contract.
In a further boost for the Flames, Heal’s daughter Shyla is also on the franchise’s radar.
The reigning WNBL Youth Player of the Year, rising Opals star and WNBA draft hopeful is one of Australia’s best talents from the guard position.
The 19-year-old is coming off a stellar season with the Townsville Fire where she helped guide the franchise to the WNBL grand final before losing to eventual champions, the Southside Flyers.
At present, WNBL clubs can’t sign players until Basketball Australia confirms the free agency window, with a date yet to be confirmed.
Heal senior will return to the professional coaching ranks for the first time since being appointed the head coach of now defunct WNBL team the South East Queensland Stars in 2015.
The Stars were dissolved and left the WNBL after just one season.
Heal has previously coached the Sydney Kings between 2012 and 2014, while he has also had roles with the South Dragons, Wellington Saints and locally with the Sutherland Sharks.
