Favourites draw wide in Hollindale Stakes

A string of wide draws to top contenders has seen Godolphin star Avilius emerge as the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes favourite for this Saturday.

Wide draws to several leading contenders looks set to level the playing field in Saturday’s Group 2 Hollindale Stakes with Godolphin star Avilius favoured to break a 19-month winless run at the Gold Coast.

The James Cummings-trained seven-year-old will jump from barrier nine and holds top billing at $5.50 with TAB fixed odds for the 1800m test after garnering early support for the feature event.

Avilius opened a $6 equal favourite alongside Zaaki for the Hollindale, with the latter drifting to become a $6.50 second pick in early betting after drawing gate 14.

However, a blanket could cover the top six or seven in the market.

Kiwi superstar Melody Belle was $7.50 into $7 despite drawing barrier 17 with Fifty Stars (barrier 12) and Homeman (barrier 16) at $8 and $11 respectively with tricky gates to contender with.

A wide draw in barrier 15 for the Danny O’Brien-trained Paradee hasn’t stopped the early money for mare whose price has been slashed from $14 to $10.

All four Chris Waller runners fared well in the draw with Humidor (barrier three), Mister Sea Wolf (one), Shared Ambition (eight) and Toffee Tongue (five).
