Gun rookie suffers gruesome finger injury

Rising Melbourne star Jack White has severely dislocated the pinkie on his right hand during United’s win over Adelaide. WARNING: It’s not for the squeamish.

Gun Melbourne United rookie Jack White has suffered a gruesome finger injury in the dying seconds of his side’s 82-73 triumph over the Adelaide 36ers.

The 23-year-old was fouled hard by 36ers guard Tony Crocker while driving to the basket, landing awkwardly on his side with his finger severely dislocated.

The American was ejected after committing his second unsportsmanlike foul in the high-stakes fourth quarter, with an audible profanity also picked up from Crocker by the broadcast.

Adelaide coach Conner Henry defended Crocker post-game, claiming the foul was a legal play on the ball and that his players are not “dirty.”

“Every point counts in the bubble and in the league and we’re not gong to as a group stop playing,” Henry said.

“We’re not going to let someone try to go down and dunk without contesting it.

“I know my guys aren’t dirty guys, we try to play the right way.

“It was, I think, a legal play on the ball and it was very hard contact – I think Tony went at the ball and I think he got a good portion of the ball.”

Dean Vickerman, coaching in his 200th NBL game, said White will be assessed for further damage.

“It was obviously quite a severe dislocation, it’s been popped back in now,” Vickerman said.

“It’ll just be seeing if it’s anything more than that. We’ll get some scans and X-rays to see if there’s any kind of fractures to it as well.

“It was hell of an athletic play, obviously it was called excessive, it was a long way to fall for him when you are the athlete that you are as Jack White.

“I don’t really want to talk about (the intent), I saw it from where I saw it so he made a play at the ball and I’m sure there was intent to go after it and try and block it.”

White, a Duke University product, has been an important addition this season, particularly on the defensive end.

He is second in the league for blocks with 2.3 per game and is averaging 9.4 points, 6.3 rebounds 23 minutes per game.

United will be sweating on the extent of his injury with superstar Chris Goulding and guard Shea Ili on the sidelines.
