Shadow Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland says “perceived inconsistencies” around the India travel ban raise concerns about government transparency. “I’m not saying it’s racist but again I’m not someone who’s personally affected by it”,” she told Sky news. “It’s well understood that the first priority of government is to keep Australians safe and one of the reasons we’ve done so well in Australia is because our states and our overall international borders are capable of being managed,” she said. “But at the same time there is grave concern about perceived inconsistencies here. That we have this rule … effectively criminalising Australian citizens from returning home.” Ms Rowland pointed out Australia did not adopt a similar position and ban flights from the United States, United Kingdom and Italy at the height of the pandemic.
