NBL star rushed to hospital

The South East Melbourne Phoenix looked sloppy on Thursday night and an injury to Ryan Broekhoff has compounded the side’s woes.

South East Melbourne star Ryan Broekhoff was sent to hospital on Thursday night after suffering an inadvertent elbow to his left eye from Brisbane Bullets guard Nathan Sobey.

It’s the latest setback for Broekhoff, who was returning after missing the last five games with a groin issue.

The contact occurred as Broekhoff and Sobey crossed paths in the lane during the second quarter with the Brisbane star throwing his arm in the air to shake off the defensive pressure of Kyle Adnam.

“It looked like maybe Sobey was trying to exaggerate some contact, threw his arms up and collected Rowdy on the way through,” Phoenix head coach Simon Mitchell said postgame. “I think they reviewed it, it was probably one you need to ask the referees why there was no call at the time, I couldn’t tell you.”

Brisbane head coach Andrej Lemanis said he felt for Broekhoff, but the incident was purely an accident.

“I know Sobes was concerned about Rowdy’s health during the game and after the game,” Lemanis said. “It was 100 per cent not intentional. From that point of view, I obviously feel for Rowdy and am sorry he got injured but in terms of whether there’s something in it, there’s absolutely nothing in it from my perspective.”

Suffering from blurred vision, the 30-year-old was sent to hospital for a check-up. The incident further soured the night for South East Melbourne, with the disappointing loss to Brisbane leaving them clinging to the fourth and final playoff spot entering the last month of the season.

“We won’t move on from the loss, we have to take our lessons from it. We’ve done a lot of soul searching the last couple of weeks, we have not been happy with our performance. Especially here at home. For whatever reason we are finding these really flat periods and we need to generate energy,” Mitchell said.

“The guys need a rest and they’ll get one this weekend, as much as the knee jerk reaction is we need to get back on the floor and flog these guys, but it’s not. It’s about management. It’s disappointing to lose Rowdy again, we just can’t seem to take a break with our roster and trying to get any sort of continuity. We are going to rest these guys up. I think we come back Monday and work on our deficiencies.”
