More than 30 warnings have been issued across NSW and Queensland as heavy rain and flooding wreaks havoc across large parts of the nation’s eastern states.

Some regions could be hit by as much as 200mm of rain on Sunday, leading to flash flooding and potentially “life-threatening” conditions.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced on Sunday morning 10 State Emergency Service flood boats had been sent to assist rescue efforts in NSW, along with 40 crew and other resources.

Among the dozens of alerts, the weather bureau issued a severe weather warning as a “top priority” for a section west of Canberra and a large stretch of coast between Illawarra and Northern Rivers.

“Very heavy rainfall, likely leading to flash flooding, presents a serious risk to the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter, Sydney Metropolitan, Illawarra, and Central Tablelands districts,” it declared on Sunday morning.

“In some areas, heavy rain and flooding may be life-threatening,”
